Biography

Jan Bartelema studied at the School of music in Zwolle and Enschede, resp. with Pieter van der Staak and Jorge Oraison. During his studies he took a diverse range of master classes with for example John Mills. After graduating he took lessons with Milan Zelenka in Prague with whom he performed later in life as guitar duo. They also made radio recordings together. As a soloist he performed in various European countries, Canada and the USA.

Jan also performed with a range of orchestras in performances such as Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo, Concerto in D by Mario Castelnuovo Tedesco and the world premiere of the guitar concerto of Annette Kruisbrink. In chamber music Jan was active in music for guitar, choir and organ; guitar and cello; guitar and piano or harpsichord and as a member of the Juerga Ensemble with Soprano, flute and two guitars.

In his choice of repertoire he gives a preference to originality. As a result of this search for new music, many composers dedicated guitar compositions to him. Among these composers are Pieter van der Staak, Annette Kruisbrink, Tera de Marez Oyens and Atanas Ourkouznov

By now, two solo CD’s have been produced with compositions of Van der Staak and Kruisbrink. Both received praising reviews in various guitar magazines. Furthermore two CD’s with chamber music performed with the Juerga Ensemble and the Ecuentro Guitar Quartet are published. As a composer (including in didactic work) Jan is active and his work has been published with different publishers in the Netherlands and abroad.
